City of Ball Ground

Location: 45 miles north of Atlanta
Population: 730
Area: 1.2 square miles
Zip code: 30107
Incorporated: 1883

Ball Ground was named by the Cherokee Indians who used nearby land for inter-tribal competitions in a sport similar to lacrosse. When surveyors planned to run the railroad through the area, it was determined that a station would be built.  Progress began immediately, and the town was created. Sawmills and woodworking companies thrived in those days, but Ball Ground is most noted for its marble production.  The depot provided a place of commerce for local farmers, and many new buildings and some schools were built.
